Does a lot of you like to crochet. Where do you get your paterons from and stitches from.

Post 2 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Wednesday, 02-Jan-2008 16:21:23

I like both crocheting and knitting. Stitches I'll have someone sighted read to me from a book, and then record them in a document on my computer, and patterns same...Or make my own.

Crocheting is something I hope I can find the time to learn this summer, when I'm not busy with research papers, tests, notetaking, and preparing speeches.

I'd love to learn how to crochet, but I dont' know anyone who can teach me. Was it hard for you guys to learn?

Post 5 by cattleya (Help me, I'm stuck to my chair!) on Thursday, 03-Jan-2008 17:24:23

No, actually it wasn't, but you got to have someone who is patient, can let you watch their hands, etc...And you have to be patient, and keep in mind that just like with anything else some modifications may be required. A lot of sighted people do it by simply watching where the needle is, but we need to feel where it is and the person who teaches should understand that from the beginning. Maybe some day soon I'll sit down and write down steps and see if I can get it described well enough for those blind individuals who wish to learn. Hmm, any interested in that type of an experiment?

Ok, soon as I can start it I'll see what I can do. Got so much going on right now I don't even get on here to play annagrams anymore. LOL, just to read and relax before attacking my next project, or part of it...

If you are able to come up with anything, and you are able to find the time, I'd be interested to read what you've got. Thanks for the offer.

You can do some resarech for some paterons.

I used a book from web braille and learned the basic stiches from that, and i only do simple things like scarves and blankets. They are straight. I'm to scared to tackle hats. I hear the granny squares are easy but I think I'd need to see one before atempting it.

Post 11 by Harmony (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 13-Jan-2008 18:34:15

I haven't learned to crochet, but would like to. The only thing is, I don't think I know anyone who will be able to teach me because no-one in the family knows how to crochet very well if any.

Post 12 by Dqueen21 (Generic Zoner) on Friday, 18-Jan-2008 12:38:01

I'm taking Chrochetting classes aAt Braille Institute. I love it!

i'd also be interested in reading steps on how to crochet. Also, if anyone can explain knitting that would be great!!

Gemini, No it wasn't hard to learn. I got the basic concept in about half an hour. By the next week when I returned to the next lesson I had crocheted a thirty-seven feet long rope! Lmao! It stretched out of the room on both sides I remember. I got upset when they said they were going to take most of it apart. Anyways, I learned at the braille institute too, but I can only do a single and a double. Lol! I do scarves and blankets but not very well.

I'm teaching myself how to crochet...it's sure an interesting process, and I have learned it over the Net.

Post 16 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Wednesday, 14-Oct-2009 0:48:02

There is a special way to do it if you're blind so it's not so hard.

Post 17 by tyger_lillee84 (I can't call it a day til I enter the zone BBS) on Wednesday, 14-Oct-2009 12:37:08

What's the special way??? Can you try and explain how you do it, or tell us where you learned??

Post 18 by Harmony (I've now got the silver prolific poster award! wahoo!) on Sunday, 30-May-2010 12:29:20

To post 15, which internet site did you go to for learning to crochet?

Post 19 by Thunderstorm (HotIndian!) on Sunday, 30-May-2010 21:48:38

I honestly couldn't understand what's crochet, now.

after reading this board, I've just realised it's something related with stiching or sewing. but not sure, though.

someone please?

Raaj.

I know you use a hooked needle, but the rest of it confuses me. I'm one of those people who could read instructions on how it's done many times over, but I need someone here to actually work with me hand over hand to understand the concept.

Post 21 by Siriusly Severus (The ESTJ 1w9 3w4 6w7 The Taskmaste) on Thursday, 12-Aug-2010 3:52:32

well, it's hard to explain but I'll try I suppose. I am no master at it I'll say that much, so...... I am not particularly artistic. I have made a blanket however.

You basically tie a nott around your finger to start it off. then take your finger out and stick the needle in that loop pulling the string tight around the needle. then, you take the string which should be to the left of the needle and loop it around the needle so it sort of seems like two loops. Hold the newly looped string down with your thumb across the needle and bring the string below your newly looped one to the top and take it over the hook. You have a stich now. Now continue this until you have enough done. Now doing the double crochet you poke the needle in to a hole. hold the bit you have done and feel for the closest hole to the needle. You need the one next to that. lift up the top layer there and loop that string over the needle. now, you need to loop the string to the left of the needle around the needle. hold the string again. and with your other hand pull the middle loop over the top of the hook. now, loop another bit of the uncrocheted string around the needle. and hold that while bringing the two loops under it over the hook. so you have both now. do this for row after row. just turn the thing you are doing around and do the same thing for the next row. Make sure you count the stitches to make sure you have all of them, or else you'll start losing stuff and your thing will get smaller and smaller.

Damia, post 10, what was the title of the book from web-braille, please?

Post 23 by BethanyRose (the one and only Rose of Nativeness) on Friday, 27-Aug-2010 14:12:54

I'm also interested in post 15...I'm trying to teach myself how to crochet and learning over the net. I haven't gotten too terribly far with it--learning technique and all--so it would be great if you could give us the website. Shalom!

Likewise, I would love to learn how to crochet and knit, but I wouldn't have a clue where to start.

Rachel, thank you for trying to describe it, but unfortunately, I don't really understand. If anyone could recommend any books or websites to aid learning, I also would really appreciate them.

Thanks,

Danielle

I too would love to learn how to do this! My old neighbor offered to teach me a few years ago, but I always rejected the offer. Now I wish I wouldn't have. But I'm going to try calling my local crafts store this weekend and see if they have a class to teach me, or if someone is willing to teach me how for a cheap price... call your local craft store, and see if they have a class, or if they would be willing to teach a totally blind person such as myself how to do this!
I'll let everyone know how the craft store calling goes!

Hey I am interested in learning too. I found this website that a friend has told me about and it has many books you can buy and are either in braille or electronic format with instructions.
